EasyJet has apologised to passengers after reports of people spending “nights” on the floor of Palma de Mallorca airport. The Balearic Islands have been hit by severe flooding that has left cars immobile and planes unable to land, with torrents of rainwater flowing through the streets and airport.

On Thursday, August 15, numerous flights were diverted to nearby airports on the mainland. The regional fire service said it had cordoned off areas in central Palma and evacuated 29 people from a train on the route between Palma and Manacor.

The latest update from easyJet on Thursday said: “Due to the ongoing adverse weather conditions in Palma de Mallorca, some flights were unable to operate today. We advise all customers flying with us to and from Palma to check the status of their flights on the Flight Tracker at www.easyjet.com/en/flight-tracker for real-time information.”

“The safety and wellbeing of our customers and crew is our highest priority. While these circumstances are beyond our control, we apologize for any difficulties or inconvenience this may cause. We want to assure you that we are doing everything possible to minimize the impact of the disruption and are working hard to ensure our customers reach their destination safely.”

“We will contact you as soon as we have further information and recommend that you wait until we contact you with new flight details before coming to the airport for your flight.”

Many angry passengers are complaining on X about having to sleep on the floor at Palma airport. One woman said: “We’re trying to sleep on the floor with our three young children!” Another social media user wrote: “It’s chaos at Palma airport. Two days of dramatic storms and flight cancellations.” A third wrote: “Thanks @easyjetholidays, now we’ll probably sleep two nights with a six year old at Palma airport.”

In a post on Thursday evening, the airport said: “Strong storms over the Balearic Islands are affecting the airports of Palma, Menorca and Ibiza. Flight operations are significantly disrupted. Safety comes first.”

An airport spokesman said on Friday: “Due to the severe weather, flights were cancelled on Wednesday and Thursday. The airlines are now rebooking passengers on other flights. As of today, airport operations are running normally.” EasyJet was asked for a comment.

An easyJet spokesperson confirmed to the ECHO that some flights were unable to depart from Palma on Thursday, adding: “We continue to work hard to support affected customers. As well as using larger aircraft on existing flights today to provide more seats for customers, we are also operating two additional flights today, one to London Gatwick and one to Lyon.”

“We are contacting affected customers with information on how they can rebook onto this flight free of charge. We are aware that due to a lack of hotel availability, some customers stayed last night at the airport, which remained open for them.

“Teams at the airport distributed refreshment vouchers and tried to make customers’ stay as comfortable as possible. “Although this is beyond our control, we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. We advise customers flying to or from Mallorca today to check our flight tracker at www.easyjet.com/en/flight-tracker or via the app for the most up-to-date information about their flight.

“As these weather conditions will continue today, it is possible that there could be further impacts. All easyJet Holidays customers departing today and tomorrow (Friday and Saturday) will be contacted directly regarding their upcoming travel.
