Moms for Liberty is once again hosting the storytime that caused controversy last year

Moms for Liberty complained last year when the Huntsville-Madison Public Library briefly canceled its planned “Brave Books” story hour.

Organizers claimed the library canceled the event based on the organizers’ views and the content of the presentation. Library representatives said the event’s expected attendance far exceeded the original projection of about 30 people and overwhelmed the library.

After Brave Books author Kirk Cameron threatened to sue, the library finally allowed the event to take place in an additional room.

Moms for Liberty is now holding a similar event again on August 24 in numerous areas of the state, including at the Huntsville Library.

According to Brave Books, “See You at the Library” is a national day when thousands of families gather at public libraries to host educational story times celebrating a return to American, constitutional and biblical values.

The event serves as a counterpoint to young adult books with sexual content and LGBTQ themes, which have been heavily targeted by Moms for Liberty, Clean Up Alabama and Eagle Forum over the past year.

The events will take place in Huntsville and several branches in Mobile and Baldwin Counties, the two areas of the state with Moms for Liberty branches.

There will also be an event at the Mt. Laurel Public Library, where the controversy led to a takeover of the library board by the state legislature’s all-Republican delegation.

Some other libraries that have not yet made headlines are also hosting events, including story times at the Demopolis and Phenix City libraries.

The Autauga-Prattville Public Library is also hosting a “See You at the Library” event, which, despite the same name and date, initially seemed like a separate event, but is primarily about honoring local first responders.

Late Thursday, however, the library was added to the Brave Books map of events in Alabama. Each event on that map includes a disclaimer that the event is not promoted or sponsored by the library, and that statement applies to the APPL event as well.

But the APPL is hosting and sponsoring this event, according to Facebook posts promoting the event. APR was unable to reach APPL officials for clarification before press time.

The APPL board is currently embroiled in litigation over policies that customers say are overly broad, vague, and discriminatory based on opinion. The board has changed its policies in hopes of having the lawsuit dismissed, but will face a federal judge’s decision on whether to ban these policies.
