Tasty treats for the tailgate – review of the 2023 season

As we continue the countdown to the start of the 2024 college football season, we’re rounding up last year’s tasty tailgate treats. Last week, we rounded up the tasty tailgate treats from the 2021 and 2022 seasons. Which recipe was your favorite? This week, we have all the recipes from the 2023 season. Kickoff weekend

We started 2023 with a collection of treats for kickoff weekend. Since it’s still warmer than football season should be, we kept the recipes cool. Starting with a Midwest Mary that went well with the Cobb Salad Sub. As did the Dilly Veggie Pizza. And who doesn’t love a tasty dip like the Irish Nacho Dip? Then you always need something sweet to round out the day. No-Bake Peanut Butter Cookies

Cheese balls and meatballs

Here at Last Word on College Football, we seem to have a love for cheese balls, meatballs, and any bite-sized treat that makes tailgating a little more palatable. With football-themed names and a little splash of alcohol to enhance the flavor, they taste even better. Check out the meatball collection, Sideline Sausage Balls, Bacon Cheeseburger Balls, and some Barbecue and Beer Meatballs. There are more cheese ball recipes than there are college football teams, and these were two of the best. The Football BBQ Pulled Pork Cheese Ball and the Cracked Out Cheese Ball. Finally, we’ve got another sweet treat: the Football Cookies and Cream Cheese Ball.

Cool treats for hot games

With global warming keeping September on the toasty side, we’ve found some cool treats to get you through the lunch rush and late afternoon heat. Let’s start with a couple of pasta salads like the Tailgating Buffalo Chicken Pasta Salad and the BLT Pasta Salad. A fruit salsa is a tasty salsa alternative. Peach season is in full swing, so it’s the perfect time to make a SSparkling lemonade with peaches.

If you dive, I dive, we dive

Dips are a must at a tailgate party. Anything can be a dip if you mix enough things together. Here’s an exceptional collection of dips. A little spice and cheese to get the tailgate party going: Cheesy Jalapeño Corn Dip, Cheesy Black Bean Dip, and Beer Bacon Cheese Dip. Then add some “healthy” dips, like Avocado Hummus and Buffalo Cauliflower Dip. Any tailgate party is always better with a few dips with fun names like Hissy Fit Dip and Booty Dip. You need to keep your guests happy, and any of these dips will do the trick.

Who doesn’t love a sloppy joe? We have every flavor of sloppy joe imaginable. Buffalo Chicken Sloppy Joes, because EVERYTHING has buffalo chicken in it. A tasty Italian twist: slow-cooker sloppy joes from Italy. As well as Moo Shu Sloppy Joes and Greek Sloppy Joes. For the traditionalists among you, good old-fashioned sloppy joe is just the thing.

Not your ordinary puff pastry

Putting your favorite ingredients in a puff pastry makes almost anything bite-sized, and isn’t everything better in a neat bite-sized package? Sliders are the best sandwiches to hold in one hand while holding your cocktail in the other. For those unchristian early morning parties before the 12pm kickoff, we have Bagel Breakfast Sliders. They pair well with a Bloody Mary. For post-game kickoff and the afternoon, we have Turkey Swiss Chees Melt Sliders and BLT Sliders with caramelized onions and arugula, Chicken Parmesan Sliders and last but not least, Bourbon, Bacon and Blue Cheese Steak Sliders.

Season of “Skewering” Moments

Everything tastes better on a stick. At least during State Fair season. These are some of the more fun treats available on a stick that are perfect for your tailgate party. Loaded Tater Tots on a Stick and Bourbon Brats on a Stick. For a new twist on some old favorites: Spaghetti & Meatballs on a Stick and Steak and Potatoes on a Stick. And of course, anything shaped like a football is a tailgate party winner: Football Cookie Dough Pops.

A cornucopia of Crock-Pot chilis

As the season progresses, the weather is finally getting cooler and any excuse to make a crockpot chili is an excuse for a tailgate party. White chicken chili, vegetarian crockpot chili, and butternut squash chickpea chili are some great flavors that keep chili options varied and exciting. Buffalo chicken chili from the slow cooker is always a fun twist. While crock pot chili mac and cheese puts a new twist on a traditional chili.

Drinks that delight the masses

One thing you need at any successful tailgate party is a wide variety of beverages. These are some very grown-up drinks and very tasty drinks. Mulled wine from the winter white and apple cider Old Fashioned. The Fireball Hot Toddy is a new way to say “welcome to the sip.” And a Sriracha Bloody Beer with Chili Sugar Bacon will cure any college football fan’s ailment.

The whole soup for you

Soups are a staple of late fall games. They’re quick and easy to make and can easily feed a crowd. These are some recipes that are just as exciting as the conference games. Dumpling soup and cauliflower soup are full of flavor. Beef tortellini soup, cheddar cheese potato soup, and chicken parmesan soup add a cozy, comfort food vibe.

You can never have too many wings at a tailgating party. These recipes are a little off the beaten path but still delicious. A great project for the bored teens at the holiday party, they can whip up a sweet turkey cheese ball. Who doesn’t love sausage dip? It can be eaten for breakfast or lunch. It’s delicious anytime. Sausage dip. These tasty bites add a fun layer to all the traditional Thanksgiving treats, like French onion soup bites and beef stuffed mushrooms. While everyone is navigating their Thanksgiving leftovers online shopping and browsing all the Black Friday deals, these tasty treats will make everything better. Thanksgiving leftover tacos and bacon wrapped stuffed bites because everything is better in a taco or wrapped in bacon. Leftover turkey salad is a tasty option to feed your tailgate guests and use up all your Thanksgiving leftovers in one go: turkey and potato stew. Don’t forget a sweet yet tart treat like leftover cranberry sauce bars.

Championship weekend

As the College Football Playoffs expand to 12 teams, the need for more and more tailgate recipes will also increase. Last year we did team-themed recipes. This season we need to come up with some new and exciting recipes to get you through the new and crazy world of the College Football Playoffs.

Because it’s winter and soups are awesome. These soups are the comfort food that will satisfy anyone who is still fit at the end of the season. Traditionally Beef stew can be prepared in many ways to suit your taste. Crockpot potato soup, on the other hand, is hearty and warm and can be made with various meat additions for more flavor. Lasagna soup and chicken enchilada soup are always a tasty pre-game snack.

Holidays and Bowl Games

With the holidays and college football in one neat little package, you can combine your holiday party with your tailgate party and voilà, you have the perfect excuse to whip up a batch of Brandy Hot Toddy that also help keep colds at bay. Butterscotch Haystacks/Tumbleweeds may be the most underrated holiday treat. Naughty Knots, just for the name, be naughty and save Santa a trip! And finally, the Sausage Roll Wreath and Pull-Apart Christmas Tree so you can be the hostess with a twist.

New Year’s Eve

There’s no need to join the crowd when you can stay home and watch football to your heart’s content while wearing your lucky sweatpants. These tasty treats will add some “fancy” to your tailgate party. Raspberry sorbet spritz, bacon wrapped dates, and champagne cupcakes. Although sausage balls are simply a fan favorite that you can dress up or make more casual, they’re always popular.
