Residents evacuated after fire in eighth-floor apartment in Brownhills high-rise

Shortly after 1:30 p.m., emergency crews were called to Humphries House, a 17-story apartment building on Lindon Drive.

Fire engines were dispatched from Aldridge, Bloxwich, Walsall, Willenhall, Bilston, Sutton Coldfield and Perry Barr stations, manned by 30 firefighters from the West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS). Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service also attended from Lichfield.

According to WMFS, the fire broke out on the eighth floor of the building. Residents from the eighth floor and above were evacuated.

Officers from the West Midlands Police were also on site. A cordon was set up while the emergency services were on site.

An update this afternoon said: “It was confirmed that this fire was extinguished at 3.25pm.”

“Apparently only one apartment was affected, no injuries were reported.

“We will soon reduce our forces on site to four fire brigades.

“Our investigators will work to find out how it started.”

A statement released later that day said: “Emergency services have made good progress on this incident. Only one building was affected by fire, although apartments above and below were searched to check for possible fire spread.”

“No injuries were reported and three teams are still on site.

“Colleagues from West Midlands Police and West Midlands Ambulance Service were also present but have since been withdrawn.

“A cause has not yet been determined.”
