Saints add TE Treyton Welch to practice squad

The New Orleans Saints have been adding and subtracting tight end players all offseason. After Kevin Rader’s recent injury, they are expected to sign Treyton Welch to their practice squad, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC2 Houston. This also came after undrafted rookie Dallin Holker made the 53-man roster, leaving a practice squad spot open that he could have filled had that not been the case.

Welch could be a solid option for the reserve position. He had a five-year college career, spent entirely at Wyoming, and in his 50 games there he had 77 catches for 874 yards and 9 touchdowns. This offseason he was signed by the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent and with $125,000 guaranteed he was clearly a priority target. He finished the preseason with 2 catches for 26 yards before the Browns released him as part of roster cuts.

At 6-foot-3 and 230 pounds, he has solid size and can continue to work on his frame if needed. We’ll see if the Saints are willing to develop him over time, and maybe he’ll make the roster at some point. There’s still a lot of movement around the league as each team works to finalize their roster lists, and Welch wasn’t included in the Saints’ initial practice squad announcement on Wednesday — but two other tight ends were: Mason Fairchild and Michael Jacobson. We’ll have to wait and see if that deal involving Welch goes through.
