Reduce sprinkler use, use less to meet demand

Metro Water Services is asking residents with automatic sprinkler systems to follow a staggered schedule because irrigation places a high strain on Nashville’s water system.

In order to continue to provide water for residential, irrigation and fire protection purposes, the department is asking Nashville residents with odd-numbered houses to use their automatic sprinkler systems only on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Residents with even-numbered houses are asked to use their sprinkler systems on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Residents are asked not to water more than three days per week and between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. due to overwhelming demand for water for the system in the early morning hours.

For residents who water with hand hoses or buckets, there is no restriction on the number of days per week they may water, but they are asked to limit watering to the hours between 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 a.m.

Those watering with hose sprinklers are asked to follow the odd and even address schedule and water between 7 p.m. and 10 a.m.

The ministry said if voluntary measures do not reduce peak demand, further restrictions on water use could be introduced.
