Oklahoma City Ballet presents new show with music by The Flaming Lips

The Oklahoma City Ballet will present a brand new Oklahoma-based ballet: The Flaming Lips.

From May 9 to 11, “Shorts,” a collection of three short ballets, will be presented in one program.

Created by Oklahoma City Ballet artistic director Ryan Jolicoeur-Nye, the ballet will feature music by Oklahoma-based band The Flaming Lips.

“For me, as a long-time fan of The Flaming Lips, this is like a return to my childhood, combining two things I love: rock music and dance,” said Jolicoeur-Nye. “I want to juxtapose typical ballet stereotypes and rock ‘n’ roll stereotypes and hopefully bring them together in a way that changes the audience’s opinion of OKC Ballet.”

The show will mark the first time a professional ballet company will use the music of The Flaming Lips.

Short pieces include “Otra Vez,” an Afro-Cuban ballet by Stephanie Martinez, and “Divertimento No. 15,” a neoclassical ballet by George Balanchine.

All components of the ballet “The Flaming Lips,” including sets, costumes, music and choreography, are created in Oklahoma City.

“Oklahoma City Ballet wants to show ballet in a new light. We want ballet to be accessible and fun, and music is a great way to introduce new audiences to ballet,” said Whitney Cross, Oklahoma City Ballet’s director of development and communications. “The Flaming Lips have been OKC’s rock stars for 40 years, and we are so pleased to have their blessing and support for this production.”

Tickets for shorts range from $64 to $94 including fees.

Both individual and season tickets for all 2024-2025 Oklahoma City Ballet seasons are now available at www.okcballet.org.
