Man jumps from second-floor HDB flat to save son after fire breaks out in Hougang
A fire at Block 313 Hougang Avenue 5 caused a man to jump from his second-floor apartment on Friday (16 August).
A local resident told Shin Min Daily News that he saw the man lying on the ground with the injured ankle and shouted:
There are still people in the house!
The man’s wife then threw their son out of the window.
Later, his wife wanted to jump, but members of the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) arrived at the scene of the accident and advised her against it.
Entire living room damaged by fire
According to the SCDF’s Facebook post, firefighters responded to the fire in Hougang at around 12:50am on Friday (16 August).
When SCDF officers arrived at the scene, they found the living room of a second-floor apartment ablaze and one person reportedly trapped inside.
A fire brigade team then forced its way into the apartment through the front door and rescued the trapped person.
SCDF officers later extinguished the fire, but the entire living room of the apartment was damaged.
Of the four people examined by SCDF paramedics, three were taken to hospital. One person refused hospital admission.
Fire probably caused by PMD
According to SCDF, about 30 people were evacuated from neighboring units as a precautionary measure.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire probably originated from a personal mobility device (PMD) in the living room.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
