NASCAR Cup Series team prepares for unexpected appearance at Southern 500

MBM Motorsports has made seven entries so far in the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season after not participating in the series at all in 2023. However, the company has made some changes to its original plans for the year over time.

Those changes include a withdrawal from the June race at Iowa Speedway and a surprise appearance in the August race at Richmond Raceway. The reason for this is primarily because NASCAR required Parker Retzlaff to compete in a non-superspeedway race before competing for Beard Motorsports at Daytona International Speedway last Saturday night.

MBM Motorsports had originally planned to participate in last Saturday night’s race at Daytona, but the No. 66 Ford was not on the entry list, which could prove to be a blessing in disguise, as it would have left five non-charter cars battling for four spots, guaranteeing one car would not make the starting grid.

Carl Long’s team had not originally planned to compete in the Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway next Sunday night, but they are now scheduled to make their first start since racing in Richmond three weekends ago in the 366-lap race on the 1.366-mile (2.198-kilometer) four-turn egg-shaped oval in Darlington, South Carolina.

Timmy Hill will make his second appearance in the 2024 season behind the wheel of the No. 66 Ford. This will be his third start, including the non-points-based All-Star Open exhibition race at North Wilkesboro Speedway in May. He also competed at Circuit of the Americas in March.

Hill is one of six drivers to have competed in a points race for MBM Motorsports this season. The others are Retzlaff, David Starr, BJ McLeod, Chad Finchum and Josh Bilicki. McLeod is the only one of those drivers to have started twice for the team in 2024.

Although the 2024 season has shown that MBM Motorsports’ plans are subject to change, five playoff races are currently scheduled.

The team’s playoff schedule includes races at Bristol Motor Speedway on Saturday, September 21, Kansas Speedway on Sunday, September 29, Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval on Sunday, October 13, Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Sunday, October 20 and Phoenix Raceway on Sunday, November 10.

The team has not yet confirmed any drivers for any of these races.
