Andalusia’s greenhouse watermelon has achieved the second best price of the last ten seasons

In the 2023/2024 season, the Andalusian watermelon sector achieved the second highest average prices of the last decade, according to a report by Hortoinfo based on data from the Price and Market Observatory of the Andalusian Regional Government. The average price paid to producers for all watermelon varieties was 0.51 euros per kilo, only surpassed by 0.64 euros per kilo in the 2021/2022 season. This price was 27.5% higher than the previous season, when it did not exceed 0.40 euros per kilo.

These average prices paid to producers for delivery to the warehouse or marketing company do not include VAT, handling costs, product marketing costs and commercial commissions and correspond to the data collected by the Andalusian Observatory up to the end of July, subject to any adjustments based on the most recent data from the marketing companies.

The price of mini watermelons, which initially aroused great expectations because their size makes them easier to eat, has not increased and remains at the bottom of the ranking compared to other watermelon varieties. The average price this season was 0.43 euros/kilo, 22.86% more than the average price of last season of 0.35 euros/kilo.

The average price of black watermelon rose to 0.57 euros per kilo in the 2023/2024 season, 29.55% higher than the 0.44 euros per kilo in the previous season.

Finally, the average price of striped watermelons in the 2023/2024 season was 0.54 euros per kilo, 31.71% more than the average price of 0.41 euros per kilo in the previous season.
