According to the Ontario County Humane Society, a dog died after the animal was left in a hot car for about four hours in Canandaigua earlier this month.

A 1.5-year-old Goldendoodle named Pecan was rushed to a veterinarian on August 15 after he was found unconscious in a car, according to the Humane Society. Veterinary staff were unable to resuscitate the dog, who was pronounced dead due to heat exposure.

The dog’s owner, Daniel R. Bowman, 49, of Geneva, is accused of leaving his dog in the hot car, officials said. He told authorities he had planned to drop her off at a doggy daycare but forgot.

Bowman is accused of leaving his car parked on North Pearl Street in the town of Canandaigua for four hours with Pecan inside. The vehicle, authorities said, was not parked in a shaded area and all windows were closed. According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, the high temperature in Rochester on August 15 was 30 degrees.

When Bowman returned to his car around lunchtime, his dog was unresponsive and he took him to a veterinary clinic for help, officials said.

Bowman was charged with animal cruelty, a misdemeanor, and is scheduled to appear on that charge at a later date in Canandaigua Municipal Court.
