Chargers bring top rookie from the 2024 draft to the training squad

With all NFL teams having reduced their rosters to 53 active players, the Los Angeles Chargers will be able to assemble their practice squad via the waiver list. The practice squad consists of 16 players who can be added to the team’s game day roster in the event of injury or other roster changes.

On Wednesday, the Chargers were able to add one of the top undrafted free agents of the 2024 class to their practice squad. Edge rusher Tre’mon Morris-Brash originally signed with the team on April 27, but was then released by the team and resigned after passing the waivers list.

During the Chargers’ three preseason games, Morris-Brash played 124 snaps and earned the highest Pro Football Focus grade among top-tier first-year edge rushers at 89.6. He was the team’s best pass rusher with four quarterback pressures and one sack. He recorded a modest five sacks, but impressively, they were all determined defensive STOPS. He also returned an intercepted pass for a 25-yard touchdown.

The fifth-year senior from UCF had an impressive college career. In his final season with the Knights, Morris Brash collected 20.5 tackles for loss, 8.5 of which were quarterback sacks. This led to him being selected to the All-Big 12 first team. He was the Big 12’s leading defender in tackles for loss.

The Chargers faced a difficult decision in the deep edge rusher room, competing for a spot with 2023 rookie star Tuli Tuipulotu and veteran free agent signing Bud Dupree.

It’s unclear if more teams would have been interested in him, but the Chargers are fifth on the waiver list this year, so most had no chance of signing Morris-Brash.

However, if a team has a need for this valuable position, they can sign him as long as he is included in the 53-man roster.
