Climbing the tower is a big challenge

The charity is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and has organised the event to coincide with the final day of the Paralympics in Paris.

Islanders are encouraged to climb up and down the 99 steps or 100 foot tower five times on Sunday 8 September for a donation of £10.

“This is not a race, but an endurance test where people test their stamina and get their hearts pumping. We estimate that it will take a fit person around 20 to 25 minutes to complete,” said Caroline Ogier, director of the Guernsey Chest & Heart Centre.

“We hope for as much participation as possible and will be on site all day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to ensure that everyone who wants to take part can fit it in alongside their other Sunday activities.”

“We are a charity that relies entirely on private donations and corporate support to operate. However, our funding will only last for the next few years or so.

“As we soon celebrate our 50th anniversary of supporting local health services, we felt it was fitting to hold a fundraiser that really challenges people to get their heart health tested and support an important local charity.”

Teams can complete the event in a relay. There is no obligation to climb to the top. All proceeds from the event go directly to the charity.

The spiral staircase inside the tower is divided into three platforms so that participants can take a break if necessary and enjoy the panoramic view of the island.

The latest health report shows that diseases of the circulatory system (26%) and respiratory diseases (10%) are two of the most common causes of death, after cancer (33%).
