English dub review: Suicide Squad Isekai, episode 9

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

It turns out that the queen has been replaced by a being called the Undead King, but Fione escapes and the Suicide Squad reunites to face the king’s forces.

OUR OPINION

We’ve arrived at the penultimate episode of Suicide Squad Isekai, so of course the fuse is lit and a big explosive battle begins that is the culmination of everything we’ve seen in the series up to this point! And in some ways it succeeds, but in others it kind of confirms that this series may not have used its time so well. First of all, who the hell is this Undead King and why is he (she? For a king, he looks quite like a little girl) the final boss to face at the end of all this? They’ve been impersonating the Queen this whole time and therefore controlling the plot to some degree, but somehow this still feels unexpected. Apparently they’re also controlling Enchantress, who also seems to have someone the King is holding hostage, but there’s only one episode left so I’m not really expecting a big reveal. Also, it turns out that King Shark’s capture wasn’t much of a problem, as he IMMEDIATELY escapes and then starts fighting Killer Croc. Oh, and Katana gave the Thinker’s Helmet to a nobleman whose mind controls the soldiers. So all of this happens without adequate explanation.

But there’s also a lot that feels earned and pays off from the previous build-up. For one, Fione finally seems to be taking advantage of her resemblance to Harley and puts on makeup that resembles hers to give herself more confidence when kicking ass! I kind of thought she was going to use it as a disguise of some sort, but whatever, I’ll take it. And remember that baby dragon they picked up in episode five? Well, now it’s all grown up and helping them, so that’s pretty cool! So all that’s left for the Squad to do is come together, defeat and/or kill the other opposing members and the undead king, save the kingdom, and possibly return home! And they only have one episode left to wrap it all up, though I’m sure they’ll have plenty of time to do that and have a little falling action to finish. I don’t see much of a change in my overall feelings about this show, at least not in terms of it getting better, but it could also be a lot worse, I suppose. So come back next week for the series finale of Suicide Squad Isekai and see this bunch of assholes complete their mission or something like that.
