Groove Terminator and Soweto Gospel Choir: Electrifying dance hits with a soulful twist

Soweto Gospel Choir x Groove Terminator – History of House (Music is Fun/House of Latroit/Gallo Records, 2024)

The Soweto Gospel Choir, a three-time GRAMMY-winning group from South Africa, and Australian electronic musician Groove Terminator (Simon Lewicki) have released an outstanding album entitled History of the houseproduced by GRAMMY award-winning producer Dennis White (Latroit). The artists reinterpret iconic dance tracks from the last 50 years by combining captivating, soulful and powerful vocals with irresistible electronic dance music.

This album features predominantly live performances, which is unusual for the genre, and includes dance music from the 1970s to the 2000s. Groove Terminator’s original concept for the project, rooted in an appreciation of dance music’s African origins, led to a collaboration with the Soweto Gospel Choir, known for their work with artists such as U2 and Beyoncé.

The 16-member choir recorded primarily in Zulu, incorporating South African cultural elements into the music and visuals. The album includes Zulu versions of “Good Life” (originally by Inner City in 1988); “Everybody’s Free (To Feel Good)”, a cover of Rozalla’s 1991 song; “World Hold On” by Bob Sinclar; and a reworking of Christopher Cross’ “Ride Like The Wind”.
