While the discussion began in Ypsilanti Public Schools, people outside of school walls are also asking the same question: How far can you go too far when it comes to dress code?

Tavon Evans is one of the parents who had a lot of questions after her child’s school updated the dress code.

“It should be the parents’ responsibility – You should know: “Don’t go outside like that”, you know,” Tavon said.

Outside of school, parents disagree about what students are allowed to wear in class and what they are not allowed to wear.

“I don’t see the need for too much change,” Cece said. “They’re really trying to get these kids to not accept it like we do.”

“Jeans with holes above the knee, I think we had those when we were younger,” said Cece. “I think hoods are controversial, hoodies are too big, it’s not so bad as long as it doesn’t affect or distract your classmates.”

“Jeans with holes above the knee. I guess it’s a fashion trend. It doesn’t really bother me,” said Tom McMahon, a parent. You have to respect the rules, no matter what the school decides.”
