United play away against AFC Wimbledon in the third round of the Carabao Cup

Eddie Howe’s side travel to Plough Lane to face the League Two side in what will be the Magpies’ eighth consecutive away game in domestic cup competitions after the draw was made on Wednesday night following the Magpies’ televised second round victory over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

Mark Chapman hosted the draw, which saw United become one of 25 second-round winners alongside the seven Premier League clubs in UEFA competitions who enter in the third round.

The two teams, who are facing each other for the first time since January 2000, have faced each other twice in the League Cup. In the 1987/88 and 1993/94 seasons, the London team beat the Magpies 2-1 in both third round matches.

Two separate bowls were used for the main draw, as Bowl 1 consisted of the six clubs from the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, while Bowl 2 consisted of the remaining 26 clubs. The UEFA Conference League, a competition in which Chelsea FC could participate this season, is scheduled to begin in October and therefore had no impact on the Carabao Cup third round draw.

A preliminary draw was held prior to Newcastle’s second round match against Nottingham Forest to determine the home/away placings of the six clubs in Bowl 1 for the first six games of the main draw.

The main draw was held following the match at the City Ground. The first six ties were drawn alternately between a club from Bowl 1 and a club from Bowl 2, with the home/away placement of the club from Bowl 1 having already been pre-determined in the previous draw.

After the six clubs from Bowl 1 had been drawn, the remaining ten duels were drawn only from Bowl 2. From this round of the competition onwards, the draw is no longer divided into northern and southern sections.

The third round matches will take place in the weeks starting Monday 16 and Monday 23 September. UEFA Champions League (World Cup 16 September) and Europa League (World Cup 23 September) matches are also scheduled during this period.

The date and ticket details will be confirmed on www.newcastleunited.com in due course.
