Setback in recovery of Southport dance teacher who protected children from knife attacker

A yoga teacher who was injured in a shooting spree during a Taylor Swift dance class in Southport has been readmitted to hospital with breathing difficulties.

Leanne Lucas, 35, who organised the workshop and was believed to be leading the class, was seriously injured as she tried to protect two children after leading the others into a cupboard.

Three children were killed and eight injured when a knifeman attacked the dance studio in the Merseyside seaside town on July 29. Earlier this month, friends of Leanne revealed that although she had been discharged from hospital, she faced a lengthy recovery, warning that she was “not out of the woods yet”.

But in a devastating new update, they announced that the 35-year-old is now back in hospital.

On a GoFundMe page set up to support the yoga teacher on her road to recovery, a friend wrote: “Unfortunately, Leanne was admitted to hospital again this week with breathing difficulties. She is awaiting surgery for further drainage of her lung due to an infection.”

The update continued: “Leanne had only just begun her road to recovery. Please keep her in mind and continue to support her as you have done so far by sharing the page and donating whatever you can. Thank you from the Lucas family and all friends.”

So far, more than £22,000 has been raised from 906 donations.

Previously, there were reports that Leanne had “bravely tried to protect the children” who were targeted by the attacker.

She reportedly scheduled the two-hour dance and yoga class to coincide with school holidays and co-taught the class with Heidi Barlow. Heidi was also injured in the attack, although not as seriously as Ms Lucas.

Six-year-old Bebe King was killed in the attack, along with seven-year-old Elsie Dot Stancombe and nine-year-old Alice da Silva Aguiar. Another GoFundMe page has raised over £70,000 for Bebe’s family and the dementia home where Alice’s mother worked has so far raised £44,000.

More than £68,000 has been donated to Elsie’s mother and father, Jennifer and David, who “need time to grieve and support their other daughter Rosie”.

A 17-year-old boy is accused of triple murder, ten counts of attempted murder and possession of a knife.
