LINEUPS: The Sounders made one change from their league game on Saturday, putting Andrew Thomas back in goal. LAFC countered with a virtually first-choice lineup that was missing some big-name players like Olivier Giroud, Eduard Atuesta and Jesus Murillo.

The Seattle Sounders will get a fourth chance against LAFC, this time in the semifinals of the US Open Cup on Wednesday. LAFC comes into the game having knocked the Sounders out of the Leagues Cup about 10 days ago, which was the third time they have beaten them this year. The Sounders have not beaten LAFC since May 26, 2021, nine meetings ago.

The biggest variable in this game is probably that it will be played at the Starfire Soccer Complex in Tukwila. The Sounders have a 25-1-3 record in the Open Cup at the 4,000-seat stadium dating back to their days in the USL. This will be the first time LAFC has played there.

The Sounders won 3-2 in their return to regular season action over the weekend, while LAFC lost 3-1 to the Columbus Crew in the Leagues Cup final on Sunday, after which they flew straight to Seattle.

The winner of this match will host Sporting KC in the Open Cup final on September 25.

• Paul Rothrock is the Sounders’ current all-time goal leader in the US Open Cup (3), and his next goal would put him level with Andy Rose for fifth on the team’s all-time list.
• Neither team had faced an MLS opponent to this point in the tournament. The Sounders beat USL Championship teams Louisville City, Phoenix Rising and Sacramento Republic. LAFC beat USL Championship teams Las Vegas Lights, Loudoun United and New Mexico United.
• The Sounders will be looking to win their fifth US Open Cup, while LAFC has yet to reach a final of the tournament.
• This is the sixth time in the MLS era that the Sounders have advanced to the Open Cup semifinals. They have finished 5-0-0 in their first five away games. The last time they played in the Open Cup semifinals was in 2014, when they beat Chicago Fire 6-0. They have also been there twice during the USL era, finishing 0-2-0 in those games.
