Teenagers face charges of right-wing extremist terrorism in London court

LONDON-

Two teenagers had to appear in a London courtroom on Friday. They are accused of right-wing extremist terrorism, which has no connection with the recent unrest in the country, police said.

Rex Clark, 18, from London, and Sofija Vinogradova, 19, from Cheshunt in the north-east of the city, are accused of preparing terrorist acts. Vinogradova is also charged with two counts of gathering information that could be of use to a person committing or preparing a terrorist act.

Police said investigations are ongoing but they do not currently believe there is a major threat.

“These are extremely serious allegations but I would urge the public not to speculate further about this case,” said Commander Dominic Murphy, head of the Metropolitan Police’s counter-terrorism unit.

Vinogradova was arrested on August 4 on suspicion of possessing a weapon and gathering information that could be useful to terrorists. On August 10, she was arrested again along with Clark and police obtained an arrest warrant for her.

Murphy said the allegations had no connection with recent unrest that had taken place across much of England and in Belfast in Northern Ireland. On July 30, more than a week of violent clashes with police erupted after far-right agitators spread false information online falsely claiming that the suspect in a stabbing that killed three girls at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class was a Muslim asylum seeker.

The two teenagers were due to appear before Westminster Magistrates Court.
