Everything we know about A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the new GOT prequel

HBO will bring more of George R. R. Martins world to the screen with a new series called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. This show will follow the story of Martin’s novella series, The stories of Dunk and EggAs production begins, here’s everything we know about the series so far.

What is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight about?

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is based on the short stories by George RR Martin, often referred to as The Tales of Dunk and Egg. These stories are set approximately 90 years before the events of Game of Thrones, at a time when the Targaryen dynasty still rules Westeros.

The official description of the show is: “Set in a time when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet disappeared from the minds of the living, great destinies, powerful enemies and dangerous exploits all waiting for these unlikely and incomparable friendS.”

The series is set to begin with the story “The Hedge Knight,” which follows Dunk, a humble hedge knight, and his young squire Egg. A hedge knight is a knight who roams the countryside without serving a lord. Together, the two navigate the dangerous political landscape of Westeros, encounter powerful enemies, and forge their destinies.

Who will play Dunk and Egg in the series?

The series primarily focuses on two characters: Ser Duncan the Tall, known as Dunk, and Aegon V Targaryen, who goes by the nickname Egg. Dunk is a brave knight with humble roots, while Egg is the young son of a Targaryen prince who travels incognito as Dunk’s squire.
Dunk is played by Peter Claffey, an actor known for his role in the series Wreck. Egg is played by Dexter Sol Ansell, a young actor with an impressive resume.

Who was cast in the role of Knight of the Seven Kingdoms?

In addition to the main roles, several other major characters have been cast. Finn Bennett plays Prince Aerion Targaryen, an antagonist known as Aerion Brightflame. Bertie Carvel portrays Prince Baelor Targaryen, a kind and generous nobleman. Other cast members include Tanzyn Crawford as Tanselle, Daniel Ings as Ser Lyonel Baratheon, and Sam Spruell as Prince Maekar Targaryen.

Steven Calvert will play a knight from Stormland, and Rowan Robinson has a role as “Rowan,” which is likely a code name. Abigail O’Regan has been cast in an unknown role. Fans are speculating about Robinson’s character. Many believe that “Rowan” could be Rohan Webber of Tyrosh, a character from the second novella, “The Sworn Sword.”

The series also stars Edward Ashley (“Masters of the Air”) as Ser Steffon Fossoway, Henry Ashton (“A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder” and “My Lady Jane”) as Daeron Targaryen, Youssef Kerkour (“House of Gucci”) as Steely Pate, Daniel Monks (Netflix’s upcoming film “Kaos”) as Ser Manfred Dondarrion, Shaun Thomas (“How to Have Sex”) as Raymun Fossoway, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor (“Avengers: Infinity War”) as Plummer, and Danny Webb (“The Regime” and HBO’s “The Dig”) as Ser Arlan of Pennytree.

The crew and the filming

Ira Parker is the showrunner of the series, and George RR Martin himself is writing one episode. The series is directed by Owen Harris and Sarah Adina Smith, who are each directing three episodes. Vince Gerardis, Owen Harris and Sarah Bradshaw are executive producers.
Filming began in June 2024 in Northern Ireland, a familiar location for Game of Thrones fans. The series is expected to wrap up filming in mid-September and is expected to hit theaters in late 2025.
