(AP Photo/Antonio Calanni, File) Newcastle scored a goal within 19 seconds and then won a penalty shootout against Nottingham Forest to advance in the English League Cup on Wednesday, in a game that saw Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali make a comeback from a 10-month gambling ban. Tonali was involved in the set-up for Newcastle’s extremely early goal by Joe Willock at the City Ground and played 62 minutes before being substituted, by which time Forest had already equalized through Jota Silva. The second round match finished 1-1 in normal time and went straight to penalties, where Newcastle came from behind to win 4-3 after Ibrahim Sangare and Taiwo Awoniyi missed for Forest, with Sean Longstaff converting the decisive penalty. In another Premier League clash, Jarrod Bowen inadvertently scored a controversial goal in the 88th minute to give West Ham a 1-0 home win over Bournemouth. A shot from Mohammed Kudus appeared to have deflected off Bowen’s arm. The goal was awarded and, with no video review in place at this stage of the competition, there was no chance of it being overturned – much to the annoyance of Bournemouth coach Andoni Iraola, who complained to the fourth official in the technical area. The only surprise of the night – and of the entire second round – was League One side Ipswich’s elimination at the hands of League One side AFC Wimbledon, who won 4-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw. AFC Wimbledon were rewarded with a third round match at home to Newcastle. Southampton needed stoppage time goals from James Bree and Cameron Archer to beat League Two side Cardiff 5-3 in a wild game, while Wolverhampton beat League Two side Burnley 2-0 thanks to goals from Gonçalo Guedes. Brentford beat League Two side Colchester 1-0 away. The teams playing in European competition this season enter the League Cup in the third round, where defending champions Liverpool host West Ham, while Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United all face lower-league opponents in Watford, Bolton and Barnsley respectively.
