Marana receives $4 million to improve water quality

TUCSON, Arizona (13 News) – The city of Marana will receive $4 million to improve water quality.

The money will come from Congress’s 2025 budget bill.

This money would be used for two projects, one of which is the Pioneer Well.

The Pioneer Well Project is a PFAS treatment project planned to be built in the Interstate 10 and Twin Peaks area. Once completed, it could bring cleaner water to at least 4,800 people in the region.

“PFOAs and PFOs are compounds that have entered our water system here in Pima County through no fault of our own,” said Marana Mayor Ed Honea. “We want to help build facilities that will remove these contaminants from our water.”

The Pioneer Well will be modeled after the Airline Lambert wastewater treatment plant in western Marana.

“It’s one of two $8 million power plants that the city of Marana has already built at our expense,” he said.

The other wastewater treatment plant is located in Picture Rocks.

The other project this money will be used for is to improve the wells in and around Marana Airport to reduce groundwater extraction from other wells in the area.

“Some of the money goes to the NWRRDS project, which pumps North West Regional Water into our airport and supplies parts of Marana, Metro Water and Oro Valley,” Honea said. “The three of us work together.”

When construction on this project will begin is still up to Congress. We will continue to follow this story and post more information as we receive it.
