EFL Cup: Richards and Slonina among USMNT players in third round
The field of participants for the third round of the EFL Cup has been determined following the final line-up for the second round on Wednesday.
Chris Richards, Gabriel Slonina and Antonee Robinson are among the American players set to take part in September, while Haji Wright, Donovan Pines, Lynden Gooch, Reggie Cannon and Duane Holmes will also be among the final 32 clubs taking part in this year’s competition.
Richards played 80 minutes as a substitute on Tuesday as Crystal Palace beat Norwich City 4-0 at Selhurst Park. The United States men’s national team defender will face QPR in the third round of the London derby, where Richards and Cannon could face off.
Slonina impressed on Tuesday as Barnsley beat Sheffield United 1-0 at Oakwell. Pines played his first 90 minutes since last spring, while Slonina made four saves.
Next up for Slonina, Pines and Co. is a trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United.
Robinson did not play in Fulham’s 2-0 second-round win over Birmingham City but could be part of the third-round squad. The USMNT left-back will face Holmes and Preston North End at Deepdale.
Holmes recorded an assist for Preston in their 5-0 win over Harrogate Town on Tuesday.
Haji Wright and Coventry City will welcome Tottenham to town in the third round after beating Oxford United 1-0, with Wright not playing in Tuesday’s showdown.
Gooch and Stoke City host Fleetwood Town in the next round after beating Aidan Morris and Middlesbrough 5-0, with the former USMNT defender making his 300th England appearance.
The third round of the EFL Cup will take place from 16 to 23 September.
