Carabao Cup 3rd round draw: Liverpool host West Ham

Defending champions Liverpool begin their mission to defend the Carabao Cup by hosting Premier League rivals West Ham United at Anfield in the third round.

Wednesday’s draw also saw Premier League champions Manchester City face second division Watford at home, while Arsenal host League One side Bolton Wanderers at the Emirates.

Manchester United have a home game against League One side Barnsley at Old Trafford, Tottenham Hotspur have to travel to second division Coventry and defeated 2024 finalists Chelsea host fourth division Barrow.

The third round will see teams playing in European competitions this season enter the competition after the rest of the Premier League teams have started in the second round, with matches being played in the weeks beginning 16 and 23 September.

West Ham defeated Bournemouth in an all-Premier League clash at the London Stadium on Wednesday thanks to a deflected goal from Jarrod Bowen in the 88th minute.

In another top-flight clash, Newcastle United beat Nottingham Forest 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, while Premier League sides Ipswich Town and Bournemouth were also eliminated at the first hurdle.

Fourth division side AFC Wimbledon emerged as surprise winners in the second round, beating promoted side Ipswich 4-2 on penalties after a thrilling 2-2 draw in front of 7,900 spectators in south-west London.

They were rewarded with a home game in the third round against Newcastle.

Ipswich Town were 2-1 down in normal time and on their way to elimination when Conor Chaplin headed home the equaliser in the 86th minute to force a penalty shootout.

Dons goalkeeper Owen Goodman then saved from shots from Jack Taylor and Omari Hutchinson.

“The underdog story in football. It’s another incredible night and another chapter in that story,” Wimbledon manager Johnnie Jackson told the BBC.

“As a football club we always have to take the hard road, but we find a way.”

There were goals galore for Championship team Cardiff City, who came from behind three times against Southampton but then lost 5-3 to the visitors from the Premier League after goals from James Bree and Cameron Archer in injury time.

Premier League sides Wolverhampton Wanderers and Brentford beat Burnley and Colchester United 2-0 and 1-0 respectively, with English striker Ivan Toney absent due to interest from other clubs.

Goncalo Guedes scored twice before and after half-time to put Wolves through, while Brentford goalkeeper Hakon Valdimarsson saved a penalty from Jack Payne after Keane Lewis-Potter had scored in the 45th minute.
