Congress leaders were charged for asking students to remove saffron T-shirts with pictures of Veer Savarkar and Netaji Subhash Bose

Ahead of the 78th Independence Day celebrations on August 15, Tiranga Yatras are being organised across the country. However, a controversy broke out during one of these Tiranga Yatras in Sangani village of Surendranagar district of Gujarat. The incident occurred when Congress leaders stopped the participating students and objected to their saffron T-shirts. They also reportedly asked the students to remove the T-shirts as they were allegedly promoting an ‘RSS leader’, Veer Savarkar.

Congress leaders also made derogatory remarks and repeated false allegations against Savarkar, including the repeatedly refuted allegations of involvement in MK Gandhi assassination case.

Following the incident, Harsh Sanghvi, Home Minister, Government of Gujarat, said that the Congress leaders involved in the incident have been booked for insulting freedom fighters. He added that the Congress leaders shown in the video did not deserve to attest to the patriotism of Veer Savarkar Ji and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.

According to reports, the local unit of the Congress party was about to conduct Nyay Yatra on Wednesday and when it came near the Tiranga Yatra of the students, they created a ruckus and stopped the students. The Congress leaders claimed that school uniforms were banned and the T-shirts were advertising VD Savarkar, whom they called an “RSS guy” and repeated the baseless allegations that he was involved in MK Gandhi’s murder case.

They also objected to the T-shirts, claiming that the students were forgetting and overlooked MK Gandhi and Sardar Patel in their own home state. However, it is important to note that the saffron T-shirts feature pictures of two prominent freedom fighters, Veer Savarkar and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.

Meanwhile, the video of the incident is making the rounds on social media.

In the video circulating on the internet, some Congress MPs can be seen preventing the students from participating in the Tiranga Yatra and raising objections on their T-shirts.

In the video, a person can be heard saying, “The school uniform is being suppressed and they are walking around with pictures of Savarkar of the RSS, this is not right.”

He then turns to the children and says, “Decide whether we go out with pictures of Gandhi Bapu or Savarkar.” The children were heard to reply, “Gandhi Bapu.”

A party leader was also heard harassing the teachers and principal of Sangani School for allowing students to wear T-shirts with pictures of Veer Savarkar accusing him of involvement in the assassination of MK Gandhi.

Later, Congress leaders asked the students to remove their T-shirts and the children complied.

During the incident, Congress Sevadal national president (chief organiser) Lalji Desai asked, “If you get a T-shirt of Godse or Dawood tomorrow, will you force them to wear it?”

Congress leaders also complained that Gandhi and Sardar were forgotten and a seat was given to Savarkar. However, in the video, several Congress leaders were seen wearing T-shirts with the words ‘Bharat Jodo Nyaya Yatra’ and not giving a seat to either Gandhi or Sardar Patel. Some policemen were also seen in the video.

Congress leader writes letter to district collector demanding ban on T-shirts with pictures of Veer Savarkar

Former MP and Surendranagar District Congress Committee chairman Naushad Solanki also wrote a letter to the District Collector demanding a ban on T-shirts bearing Savarkar’s picture.

“This is to inform you that as part of a conspiracy to erase the names of Gandhi and Sardar Patel from Gandhi and Sardar Gujarat, saffron T-shirts with Savarkar’s picture are being distributed to school children in Surendranagar district on the occasion of Independence Day. Gujarat is the birthplace and place of activity of Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel. Despite this, as part of a conspiracy, T-shirts with Savarkar’s picture are being distributed instead of Gandhi’s and Sardar Patel’s. This has hurt the sentiments of the people of Gujarat. Therefore, we demand an immediate ban on such T-shirts and request that T-shirts with pictures of Gandhi and Sardar Patel be provided instead,” the Congress leader was quoted as saying in DeshGujarat.

However, it is important to mention that the Mumbai-based Shrimati Indumati Vasantlal Shah Charitable Trust distributed stationery to the young students in the Chotila Taluka region. Incidentally, the Trust also gave them saffron T-shirts with pictures of Veer Savarkar and Netaji on them.

Divya Bhaskar also represents the agenda “Gandhi-Sardar will be forgotten”

While the Congress MPs made derogatory remarks about Veer Savarkar, Divya Bhaskar also reinforced the stereotype that the Gandhi-Sardars are forgotten in their home state. The title of Divya Bhaskar’s report is: Gandhi-Sardar forgotten in Gujarat: Tirangayatra began in Chotila in T-shirts of Savarkar and Subhash Chandra Bose, Congress said: “Tomorrow they will wear T-shirts of Godse or Dawood.”

It is important to note that the students only wore T-shirts of prominent freedom fighters Veer Savarkar and Netaji Bose which were given to them, while they did not show any disrespect to other freedom fighters including MK Gandhi and Sardar Patel during the Tiranga Yatra.

However, Harsh Sanghvi of India’s Home Ministry said that the Congress leaders had been booked under sections 126(2), 189(3), 221, 197(C)(D), 352 and 353 of the Indian Penal Code for insulting Veer Savarkar and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.
