22-year-old woman dies in gym while doing barbell squats

A 22-year-old woman collapsed while lifting weights at her local gym and was pronounced dead, with paramedics saying the cause was lack of oxygen.

Ariatna Lizeth Mata Esparza was training at her local gym in Torreón, Mexico, when she suddenly collapsed while doing barbell squats. Daily Mail reports.

The paramedics were unable to resuscitate Esparza. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, the news agency reported. The cause of death was anoxemia – possibly due to overexertion.

“Anoxemia refers to a reduced availability of oxygen,” Archive for Clinical Neuropsychology explains. “The brain is more dependent on oxygen than other organs in the body, and the medial temporal lobe and limbic structures are particularly vulnerable to brain damage.”

Esparza also suffered a stroke and had blood clots that Daily Mail reports.

According to an article by Mass General Brigham, it is common to faint or feel “lightheaded” while exercising.

“When we’re exercising and we’re short of breath, which is normal, and we’re also very engrossed in what we’re doing, sometimes we forget to take a really good, deep breath,” Caroline Schepker, DO, a sports medicine physician and physiatrist who treats patients at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, told Mass General Brigham.

“Many of us tend to use the wrong muscles to take a deep breath. Or we hold our breath during intense exercise.”

However, there are also underlying problems that can lead to dizziness, Schepker said.

These include cardiovascular problems, low blood sugar, neurological conditions, training in a hot environment, or other underlying – and possibly undiagnosed – infections.

If you experience a bout of dizziness during exercise, Schepker says you should definitely talk to your doctor.
