ROCKLAND — Brooklyn collective Gentleman Brawlers brings its distinctive brand of Afrofunk and indie dance music to the Strand Theater on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 7:30 p.m. Described as “Fela Kuti meets Talking Heads,” Gentleman Brawlers’ music is a sonic blend of disco horn lines, catchy highlife guitar and polyrhythms from West Africa, Trinidad and Brazil. The theater will remove some seats for this show to make room for dancing.

Led by creative duo Becca Fox and Matt Walsh, the Gentleman Brawlers love to engage audiences; their live shows spark a community-based, improvisational energy, the Strand said in a press release.

The press release states: “If you can move, you can DANCE!” shouts an exuberant Fox from the stage – or from the dance floor, where she has joined the crowd.

The band has been celebrated at NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest and WNYC’s The Greene Space, and has opened for Cimafunk and Grammy-winning artists Los Amigos Invisibles & Fantastic Negrito at the Brooklyn Bowl and at the Live at the Archway Festival in Dumbo, as well as performing at Summer on the Hudson at Pier 1 on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.

Sponsorship support for the concert series was generously provided by First National Bank and First National Wealth Management.

Tickets are $22 in advance and $25 day of the show. Beer and wine are available at the concession stands. To purchase tickets or for more information, visit www.rocklandstrand.com or call (207) 594-0070. The Strand Theatre is located at 345 Main Street, Rockland.
