SIGA and Northern Lights Casino announce multi-million dollar expansion project.

August 28, 2024 – Prince Albert, SK – The Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority (SIGA) today unveiled plans for a multi-million dollar expansion project at Northern Lights Casino that will increase the current gaming floor and make extensive changes to the casino’s interior and exterior.

Construction on the expansion will begin in late September and will take up to two years, with completion scheduled for 2026. The expansion will add 2,900 square meters to the Northern Lights Casino.

The expansion plans focus on increasing the square footage in high-traffic areas of the casino, including an improved front entrance to the casino, increasing the square footage of the main gaming floors, including a high-stakes slot machine area, an expanded smoking room, and expanding the food and beverage areas, including the kitchen, sports bar and restaurant area, and a new combined deli and bar area.

“Northern Lights Casino is one of our top seven highest-visited casinos in the province in terms of visitor numbers,” said President and CEO Zane Hansen. “We recognize that the casino has outgrown its current operating envelope and it is time for an expansion. This expansion will increase the casino’s capacity to better serve our customers, and the City of Prince Albert, the region and the entire province will enjoy this enhanced tourism destination and benefit from the increased economic activity that the expanded casino will bring.”

The Northern Lights Casino is located on the territory of the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation in Prince Albert. Representatives from SIGA, Northern Lights Casino, Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation and Prince Albert Grand Council attended the official unveiling of the expansion project renderings and the ceremonial groundbreaking at the Northern Lights Casino.

The expansion project will fundamentally redesign the building’s interior and exterior and modernize the casino while staying true to SIGA’s roots in First Nations hospitality, Hansen noted of the new casino design.

“For more than 28 years, Northern Lights Casino has played an important role in its community,” said Angela Isbister, General Manager of Northern Lights Casino. “The casino expansion not only benefits local businesses, but also many sporting events, cultural events and community organizations. Some recent examples of community support through Northern Lights Casino’s Community Investments Program and SIGA include the Tony Cote First Nations Summer Games in La Ronge, the WBSC Men’s Softball World Cup in Prince Albert, the PAGC Fine Arts Festival and a $25,000 donation to the Prince Albert Food Bank,” said Isbister.

SIGA, as a not-for-profit corporation, has a unique revenue distribution model that reinvests all net revenue back into Saskatchewan. The casino’s net revenue is redistributed – 50 percent to the First Nations Trust (which is distributed to the 74 First Nations in the province), 25 percent to Community Development Corporations (CDCs), which reinvest the money in local community initiatives, and 25 percent to the province’s General Revenue Fund.

During construction, Northern Lights Casino will remain open to continue serving its customers. Visit northernlightscasino.ca for future events and news at the casino.
