Author remembers the final season of Comiskey Park at Evergreen Park Library

EVERGREEN PARK, IL — Diehard Sox fan and first-time author Ken Smoller will visit the Evergreen Park Public Library on Saturday, Sept. 7, to talk about his book, “Last Comiskey,” from Eckhartz Press, which tells the storied history of Comiskey Park. The presentation begins at 10:30 a.m.

From 1910 to 1990, Comiskey Park was a proud place in Bridgeport. “Last Comiskey” commemorates the last season of play at Comiskey and the Sox’s run to the 1990 American League championship. Although the team won 94 games that year, they finished nine games behind the mighty Oakland A’s.

The “Last Comiskey” project, initiated during the COVID-19 pandemic by first-time documentary filmmaker Matt Flesch, resulted in a three-part documentary about Comiskey Park’s final season, including the White Sox’s unexpected championship run. The film, which can be viewed on YouTube, highlights the park’s significance through home videos, stories and photos contributed by fans like Ken Smoller.

The documentary received widespread praise from the sports media, with Tyler Kepner of The Athletic saying, “The film is so exhilarating, you can practically taste the slit.”

Smoller’s companion book is intended to serve as a permanent companion to the documentary, combining his photos with new content to capture the essence of Comiskey Park and remind fans of its magic amid discussions about a possible new stadium. The book also includes a foreword by legendary White Sox shortstop and manager Ozzie Guillén, who took the field during the acclaimed stadium’s final season.

Smoller (aka “Stadium Vagabond”) is a photographer and writer from Brookline, Massachusetts, who grew up in the Chicago area. In three decades of extensive travel, he has photographed over 2,350 stadiums in 48 states and 24 countries.

Sox fans who want to forget the current season, with a record of over 100 losses and counting, can console themselves with memories of better seasons with postseason games, even if they were few and far between.

Immediately following the presentation there will be a book sale with a signing session. The books are sold via Bookies Bookstore or you can pre-order using the QR code below.
