Rumor: Apple could add a capture button to some iPhone 16 models

If you like the Action button on current iPhone models, various rumors suggest that the 16-series iPhone models will feature an entirely new button designed to make it easier to take photos when the devices are held in landscape mode.

The button, which is reportedly called the “Capture Button” internally, is said to support multiple gestures and respond to pressure. Below is a list of the features it is said to offer:

  • While taking a picture or video, lightly press the button to activate autofocus.
  • To take a photo, press the button harder.
  • To zoom in or out, swipe the button left or right.
  • There may also be a gesture to switch between photo mode and video mode, similar to how the iPhone Camera app lets you record a video with a press and swipe.
  • DSLR camera owners are used to the ability to autofocus with a light press of the button, as they often autofocus this way on high-end cameras.

It is believed that Apple plans to place the button on the right side of the iPhone, where the mmWave antenna is located on iPhones sold in the US. The mmWave antenna itself will be placed on the left side of the handset to save space.

While the record button has been shown in CAD renderings and leaked dummy photos of all four iPhone 16 models, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has hinted that there is a possibility that it will only be available on the Pro models.

In addition to a record button, the “iPhone 16” models feature slightly larger displays, a new A18 chip that supports Apple Intelligence, and 8GB of RAM for all models, which is required to run Apple’s AI models.

Stay tuned for more details as they become available.
