Keegan Bradley: There are pros and cons to the Presidents Cup

Keegan Bradley was only supposed to be vice-captain of Jim Furyk’s US Presidents Cup team this year.

But then came the BMW Championship.

With his BMW victory, his seventh of his PGA Tour career, Bradley ended a streak of seven starts outside the top 20 and is now one of six captain candidates to be nominated following this week’s Tour Championship.

“Part of me feels terrible that I put him in that position,” Bradley said Wednesday in East Lake, where he is one of 30 players – and several potential picks – in the field.

Bradley, who finished 10th on the U.S. Presidents Cup points list, said he spoke with Furyk after his win on Sunday at Castle Pines. Furyk knows Bradley’s position, having been in the running to be an assistant before being passed over for the 2016 Ryder Cup. And for the most part, Bradley says, Furyk has allowed Bradley to focus on his golf.

Bradley’s golf career is now almost over. Bradley doesn’t believe the Tour Championship and its staggered entry format will play a major role in who completes Furyk’s 12-man team and who doesn’t.

In many ways, his fate is already sealed – and he is okay with it.

“I want to do what’s best for the team,” Bradley said. “I really mean that. If it’s best for the team for me to play, then I want to play. If it’s best for me to be vice captain and there are better matchups, then I’m happy to do that.”

Bradley added that he has been considering the pros and cons of playing or assisting at Royal Montreal next month in anticipation of his captaincy at the 2025 Ryder Cup.

“I think being vice captain would certainly help me as a captain at Bethpage because when you’re playing, your mentality changes a little bit,” Bradley said. “You’re more stressed. You’re thinking, ‘Gosh, I’ve got the alternate shot hole, I’ve got the hard drive.’ So you have different things on your mind.”

“But also, being on the ropes with these guys, in this fight, in the heat, and remembering how tough this is, and if a situation comes up where I’m playing in Bethpage, playing here, playing in the Presidents Cup, that would certainly help. … Whatever happens, I’m going to have to figure out how to make the most of it.”
