Casper Game and Fish offers training on lymph node removal for CWD testing

CASPER, Wyoming – Hunters are invited to a free training session to learn how to properly remove lymph nodes for chronic wasting testing.

The hands-on training, hosted by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, will take place on Thursday, August 29, at 6:00 p.m. at the Casper Regional Game and Fish Office, 3030 Energy Lane.

CWD is a fatal neurological disease that affects deer, elk and elk, Game and Fish explained in a news release. Early detection is critical for monitoring and treating the disease. This training is ideal for hunters and is conducted by wildlife experts. Participants will receive instruction on how to locate, extract, preserve and send lymph nodes for examination. All necessary tools and techniques will be covered.

Hunters can also view online instructions and an instructional video.

Since 1997, Wyoming Game and Fish has been actively monitoring the spread of CWD and the impact on deer and elk populations. Because the disease is now present in most deer hunting areas in Wyoming, continued monitoring is essential to understand its impact and inform future management decisions. To accurately measure CWD prevalence in herds, numerous samples are needed in each area. This year, the Casper Region will prioritize sampling, with mandatory sample submissions required in deer hunting areas 22, 88 and 89.
