Fierceness moves to the top of the Breeders’ Cup Classic rankings

Fresh from his dramatic victory in the Grade 1 Travers Stakes at Saratoga on Saturday, Wildness jumped to No. 1 in the Breeders’ Cup Classic standings, replacing Dornoch, who had led the standings for the first four weeks.

Fierceness, winner of the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and 2023 Champion Two-Year-Old Stallion for trainer Todd Pletcher, beat the fast-moving mare Thorpedo Anna by a head in the Travers and subsequently jumped from fourth to first in this week’s poll.

The Breeders’ Cup Classic Rankings are a weekly evaluation of the top 10 horses competing for the $7 million Breeders’ Cup Classic, which will be held November 2 in Del Mar.

Arthur’s Ride remained in second place with 277 votes. The 4-year-old Florida-born son of Tapit won the Whitney Stakes (G1) at Saratoga on August 3 for trainer Bill Mott and earned an automatic berth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

City of Troy rose from eighth to third with 263 votes after leading the Juddmonte International Stakes (G1) at York on August 21 to automatically qualify for the Breeders’ Cup Classic. The Aidan O’Brien-trained son of Justify is one of four internationally ranked runners in this week’s top 10.

Forever Young, winner of the UAE Derby (G2) and third in the Kentucky Derby (G1), finished fourth with 214 votes for owner and trainer Yoshito Yahagi.

Sierra Leone, who finished third in the Travers, moved up one place to fifth with 169 votes. Dornoch, who finished fourth in the Travers, dropped from first to sixth this week under trainer Danny Gargan.

Six-year-old Saudi Cup (G1) winner Señor Buscador dropped from fifth to seventh place with 122 votes for trainer Todd Fincher.

Four-year-old National Treasure, winner of the Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1), finished eighth with 118 votes for trainer Bob Baffert.

Seven-year-old Ushba Tesoro, runner-up in the Saudi Cup and Dubai World Cup (G1), remained in ninth place with 114 votes for trainer Noboru Takagi.

Four-year-old Derma Sotogake, who finished second in last year’s Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic, and Thorpedo Anna share 10th place with 97 votes each.

In the Breeders’ Cup Classic standings, each voter rates the horses in descending order using a 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 system.

The rankings are determined by a panel of Thoroughbred racing media representatives, equestrians and members of the Breeders’ Cup Board of Racing Directors and Secretaries. The rankings are announced each week until October 8.
