Sporting Kansas City reaches the Open Cup final for the fifth time

Sporting Kansas City ended Indy Eleven’s dream of reaching the U.S. Open Cup final for the first time with a 2-0 win in the semifinals on Tuesday at Children’s Mercy Park.

Sporting KC has the chance to win its fifth Open Cup title after the team won all four finals in 2004, 2012, 2015 and 2017.

The start of the match was delayed by 152 minutes due to bad weather, but Sporting quickly took the lead with goals from captain Johnny Russell in the 14th minute and Dany Rosero in the 35th minute.

The goals followed a shot by midfielder Erik Thommy that hit the crossbar in the 11th minute.

Goalkeeper Tim Melia had to make five saves and a shot by Augi Williams in the 81st minute was only saved by the post.

The game was so important for Sporting KC that Russell and Rosero were among the five regulars who did not play in the 3-0 victory over Orlando City in MLS play last weekend.

Next: Sporting KC will travel to the 2024 championship game on September 25 to face the winner of Wednesday’s semifinal between the Seattle Sounders and LAFC.
