3 teams will not return to the Southern 500

Three teams that competed only part-time during the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season competed in the Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona International Speedway last Saturday night.

Beard Motorsports, Live Fast Motorsports and NY Racing Team each entered a non-charter car in the extended 164-lap race on the 2.5-mile (4.023-kilometer) steeply banked oval in Daytona Beach, Florida.

But none of those three teams will return for this Sunday night’s Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway, the 26th and final race on the regular season calendar.

Beard Motorsports fielded the No. 62 Chevrolet for Parker Retzlaff, who played a key role in helping Wood Brothers Racing’s Harrison Burton take the win on the final lap.

It was their third appearance of the 2024 season, with another scheduled for the playoff race in October at Talladega Superspeedway, with Anthony Alfredo driving the No. 62 Chevrolet for the third time this year after competing at Daytona and Talladega earlier in the season.

Live Fast Motorsports fielded the No. 78 Chevrolet for team co-owner BJ McLeod. It was their fourth appearance of the year, although McLeod failed to qualify for the season-opening Daytona 500. He also competed at Atlanta Motor Speedway and Talladega.

The No. 78 Chevrolet is scheduled to return for the upcoming playoff race in September at Atlanta and the playoff race in October at Talladega, but the drivers have not yet been determined.

Finally, the NY Racing Team fielded the No. 44 Chevrolet for Joey Gase, who had not competed in a Cup Series race since 2021.

It was their fifth appearance of the season, although they too failed to qualify for the Daytona 500 with JJ Yeley behind the wheel. Yeley competed in their first three races of the year at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Charlotte Motor Speedway and Pocono Raceway.

There are currently no further starts planned for the No. 44 Chevrolet in the 2024 calendar.

Richard Childress Racing, which ran the No. 33 Chevrolet for Austin Hill on Saturday night, is the only other team to run a non-charter car at Daytona. They will go back to two cars at Darlington, using only the No. 3 Chevrolet and the No. 8 Chevrolet for Austin Dillon and Kyle Busch, respectively.

However, there will still be one non-charter car on the entry list for Sunday’s 366-lap race on the four-turn, 1.366-mile (2.198-kilometer) egg-shaped oval in Darlington, South Carolina. MBM Motorsports returns for the eighth time this year and fields the No. 66 Ford for Timmy Hill for the second time.
