New York Republican Party calls for cost analysis and discussion on grid reliability at upcoming climate summit

As New York prepares for its Future Energy Economy Summit in Syracuse next week, Republican lawmakers are pushing for a thorough cost analysis of the state’s clean energy goals and grid reliability to be central themes. The summit, scheduled for Sept. 4 and 5, will bring together environmental experts, state agencies and industry stakeholders to discuss moving away from fossil fuels.

State Senator George Borrello and other GOP members argue that the ambitious targets of the 2019 climate law deserve closer scrutiny, particularly in terms of their economic impact on New Yorkers. With inflation and supply chain issues already delaying projects, Republicans are advocating for a delay in the state’s emissions reduction deadlines and a more moderate approach.

But Gov. Hochul’s office remains committed to promoting the state’s clean energy initiatives despite recent setbacks. Hochul stressed the urgency of tackling climate change, citing extreme weather events as a reason to stay the course, while the GOP continues to call for a balanced assessment that considers both environmental and economic factors.
