Man dies after falling from boat in Grand Canyon National Park
The incident occurred near Fossil Rapid in the park. The man’s identity has not yet been released by authorities. This is the latest in a series of deaths in the park this year.
An 80-year-old man died after falling from a boat on the Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park.
The incident occurred on the afternoon of August 25 near Fossil Rapid in the park. National park officials said a man capsized his boat on the river and officials at the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received reports that CPR was being performed on the man.
Despite the life-saving efforts of the group and the park rangers flown into the area, the man was declared dead.
Both the National Park Service and the Coconino County Coroner are investigating the incident. The man’s identity has not been released, but officials said he was on a commercial river cruise when the incident occurred.
There have been more deaths in the park this year
Over the weekend, search and rescue teams found the body of 33-year-old Chenoa Nickerson of Gilbert, Arizona, who went missing during a flash flood that hit the area while she was hiking.
Justin Guthrie of St. Anne, Missouri, fell to his death while base jumping from Yavapai Point on the South Rim on August 1. The day before, 20-year-old Abel Joseph Mejia fell 400 feet to his death after standing too close to the edge of the rim. Park officials said his death was the result of an “accidental fall.”
