The full Solheim Cup squads for Team USA and Team Europe

Welcome to the daily ritual of Playing Through – Golf Talk Today.

Each day the crew discusses various elements of the PGA Tour, LPGA, LIV Golf and more.

Today we look at the complete squads of the USA and Europe teams for the 2024 Solheim Cup. Both teams will compete from September 13-15 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia.

US team captain Stacy Lewis and European team captain Suzann Pettersen have made their captain selections. Lewis was allowed to choose three players and Pettersen was allowed to choose four.

Now that the teams are complete, let’s take a look at each team individually.

Team line-up for the Solheim Cup of the USA

* Q: Qualifier/ CP: Captain’s Choice

— Nelly Korda (Q)
— Lilia Vu (Q)
— Lauren Coughlin (question)
— Ally Ewing (Q)
— Allisen Corpuz (Q)
— Megan Khang (question)
— Andrea Lee (Q)
— Alison Lee (question)
— Rose Zhang (Q)
— Lexi Thompson (CP)
— Jennifer Kupcho (CP)
— Sarah Schmelzel (CP)

It’s understandable why Lewis chose Lexi Thompson, as this Cup could well be her swan song. She’s also a strong Cup player with the most experience of any woman.

Kupcho is another veteran but has only recorded four top-10 finishes in 2024. Lewis finds this track to be a perfect fit for her, so it’s understandable why she chose this route.

It is also interesting that she chose Sara Schmelzel. Yes, she has six top 10 finishes in 2024, but is that enough to trust her in this highly competitive situation?

Her best finish in a month was a solo eighth at the ISPS Honda Women’s Open, but her four previous starts were a T-52, T19, T-44 and an MC.

There was also a period from April to the end of May in which she missed five cuts in six starts.

Schmelzel may surprise some people, but I’m not sure I would have voted for him.

Team USA has not won the Solheim Cup since 2017, when it defeated Team Europe 16.5-11.5 at Des Moines Golf & Country Club in Iowa.

Team line-up for the Solheim Cup in Europe

* Q: Qualifier/ CP: Captain’s Choice

— Céline Boutier (Q)
— Maja Stark (Q)
— Charley Hull (Q)
— Leona Maguire (Q)
— Georgia Hall (question)
— Linn Grant (question)
— Carlota Ciganda (Q)
— Anna Nordqvist (Q)
— Madelene Sagström (CP)
— Gemma Dryburgh (CP)
—Emily Kristine Pedersen (CP)
— Albane Valenzuela (CP)

Petersen has chosen to fill her team with the ladies who helped win the 2023 Solheim Cup, and that is a smart choice.

After defending their title in Spain, they are now looking to win four Solheim Cups in a row. The score was 14-14, but they retained the title as Team Europe won it in 2021.

Petersen’s captain’s choice includes Pedersen, who has two top 10 finishes. She is a two-time Solheim Cup participant and holds a record of 5-6-1.

Sagström has played on three teams for Team Europe. She has a record of 3-5-1, but this experience will be tremendous.

Valenzuela is a newcomer to Team Europe but a rising star, with two top 10 finishes and four top 25 finishes at the 2024 LET, which includes three co-sanctioned events.

Dryburgh was also in Spain for re-election in 2023.

Petersen has made strategic decisions in her selection. Although they don’t have any individual wins, they are all winners and know what it takes to win.
