A Bangladeshi television journalist was found dead in a lake in the capital Dhaka today, local media reported. The body of the journalist, identified as 32-year-old Sarah Rahanuma, was found floating in Dhaka’s Hatirjheel Lake.

Sarah Rahanuma was a news editor at Gazi TV, local news channel Dhaka Tribune reported.

According to Dhaka Tribune, Sarah’s body was found by a man named Sagar, who took her to a hospital. “I saw the woman floating in Hatirjheel Lake. She was later taken to DMCH where doctors declared her dead,” he said.

The son of ousted Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Sajeeb Wazed, said Sarah Rahanuma’s death was “another brutal attack” on freedom of expression in the country.

In a post on X, Mr Wazed said: “Rahmuna Sara Gazi, editor of TV’s news desk, has been found dead. Her body was recovered from Hatirjheel Lake in Dhaka city. This is another brutal attack on freedom of expression in Bangladesh. Gazi TV is a secular news channel owned by Golam Dastagir Gazi, who was recently arrested.”

A night before her death, Sarah posted a Facebook status tagging a man named Fahim Faysal, reported Dhaka Tribune. In the post, she wrote, “It was nice to have a friend like you. God bless you always. I hope you fulfill all your dreams soon. I know we had planned a lot together. Sorry we cannot fulfill our plans. May God bless you in all aspects of your life.”

In another post, Sarah wrote: “It is better to die than to live a life that resembles death.”

According to the report, the incident was reported to Hatirjheel police station. Inspector Bachchu Mia, in-charge of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), said her body is kept at the DMCH mortuary.
