A German company called ASB GlassFloor is, well, guessing. They started out making glass floors specifically for squash courts; they’ve now expanded their offering to include making glass floors with millions of LEDs under the glass, turning the floor into a gigantic display.

The company was commissioned to install one of these floor screens at the BMW Park Arena in Germany, home of the FC Bayern basketball team.

“The ASB GlassFloor offers a revolutionary visual experience. Unprecedented animations are shown, especially during player introductions, halftime shows and game breaks. Traditional logo placement is replaced by emotional video messages and relevant game data is displayed directly on the pitch, which significantly improves the fan experience.”

Apparently they use safety glass. The company says: “The elastic surface is easier on the joints and ceramic dots engraved into the glass provide excellent grip and prevent friction burns.”

Interestingly, this pitch-wide floor screen could have the greatest impact when there are no fans in the stadium. The company says it will be used as a high-tech training aid:

“The ASB GlassFloor enables the integration of real-time positional data into the playing field. Player positions are precisely recorded and visualized, enabling new training approaches. Athletes can monitor their running speed live and receive optimal passing options or the best defensive positions during training games through AI. This immediate feedback significantly improves training by providing insights into the playing field, instead of having to wait for feedback sessions with the coach after training.”

I admit that I did not see this technology as a enabler for AI trainers.
