Warriors guard makes bold announcement ahead of next season

The brash confidence of Golden State Warriors guard Brandin Podziemski has met with displeasure among some people.

Last season, teammate Andrew Wiggins took exception to the then-rookie questioning his decisions. Fans of the team believe he needs to let his game speak for itself. But his recent comments drew even more criticism as the 21-year-old detailed how he improved during the offseason.

“I know I have gotten better,” says Podziemski on Willard & Dibs“I can feel it… see it.”

“Took out the floaters,” the Santa Clara product said. “Took out the hook shots. More mid-range, more 3s off the dribble, (and) more 3s off the catch.”

Warriors’ Brandin Podziemski makes bold announcement ahead of next season

All in all, Podziemski’s changes to his shooting diet could make him even more efficient next season.

So far in the 2023/24 season, Podziemski has converted 41.0 percent of his floaters and 28.1 percent of his hook shots. However, he also only converted 31.3 percent of his mid-range shots and 35.8 percent of his catch-and-shoot threes. At the other end of the spectrum, he made 45.5 percent of his threes on pull-up attempts (30-66).

Podziemski made a respectable 45.4 percent of his field shots and 38.5 percent of his three-pointers last season, but he could soon join the 50-40-90 club. If he also worked on his free throws after shooting 63.3 percent from the free throw line as a rookie, that could be doable. He made 77.0 percent of his free throws in college, but that’s one of his most glaring weaknesses.

What does the Warriors’ rotation look like?

After a turbulent offseason, the Warriors’ rotation is likely set.

Golden State will bring back most of the players from last season. However, Buddy Hield will replace Warriors legend Klay Thompson, who left the only NBA team he knows this offseason. De’Anthony Melton will step in for Chris Paul, who the team did without this offseason. Kyle Anderson will take Dario Saric’s place, potentially freeing up playing time for starter Kevon Looney.

Podziemski, who Warriors owner Joe Lacob recently touted as an All-Star player, could have a chance at a starting spot.

Perhaps only Stephen Curry and Draymond Green can be placed in the first unit, but Podziemski still ranks high when it comes to which Warriors players fit best in the backcourt alongside Curry.

He’s more reliable than Wiggins. He’s a better playmaker than Moses Moody. He’s also a better defender than Hield and has better size than Melton.

While Podziemski’s apparent arrogance won’t convince everyone, it doesn’t change the facts. The jury is still out on Lacob’s claims. Regardless, the player, who is about to enter his second year as a pro, has a chance to become one of Golden State’s most influential players next season.
