RFK Jr. cannot remove his name from the ballots in Michigan or Wisconsin

Following recent decisions by local election authorities, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. cannot remove his name from the ballot in Michigan and Wisconsin, the two important swing states in November.

The Michigan Secretary of State’s office said Monday that minor party candidates would not be able to withdraw their candidacy after being nominated.

“So his name will remain on the ballot in the November election,” Cheri Hardmon, a spokeswoman for the office, told NBC News.

The Wisconsin State Election Commission also rejected Kennedy’s request to have his name removed after he filed papers last Friday. The commission pointed out in its decision that under state law, anyone who files nomination papers and meets the eligibility requirements “may not refuse the nomination.” The only way to remove it, said the commission chairman, is death.

“We know Trump and Kennedy are playing their games,” Mark Thomsen, a Democrat on the Electoral College, said in a statement to The Associated Press. “Whatever they are playing, they have to play it if Kennedy is on the ballot.”

Kennedy suspended his independent presidential bid last week and endorsed former President Donald Trump, but said he would not officially end his candidacy.
