SUNY Canton offers free advanced manufacturing pre-apprenticeship program

CANTON – SUNY Canton’s Center for Workforce, Community and Industry Partnerships (CWCIP) is hosting a free, two-month, community-based pre-apprenticeship program in advanced manufacturing for people of all ages and career levels interested in the field.

Funded by a SUNY pre-apprenticeship grant, the program combines industry-specific training and credentialing with pre-employment training, including resume writing tips and interview preparation. Participants also meet with representatives from area companies such as Arconic, Ogdensburg Bridge & Port Authority and Empire State Mines to learn about training and career opportunities.

“A pre-apprenticeship program is a great way to gain the practical skills and knowledge needed to find employment in the manufacturing field,” says CWCIP Executive Director Elizabeth A. Brown.

The program includes 43 hours of instruction and begins with a virtual information session from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, September 9. Training will be held on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. through November 6, with the exception of a full-day session from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Monday, September 30.

The curriculum includes a 10-hour OSHA general safety course leading to an OSHA 10 DOL card and an 8-hour low voltage safety training and exam covering the rules and regulations related to electrical safety and arc flash safety. Participants also complete the required training to earn a non-credit Essential Skills in the Workplace micro-certificate from SUNY Canton.

“With the help of SUNY’s apprenticeship grant, this opportunity is free and helps Northern residents obtain the certifications they need to enter employment,” says Angelina Blank, apprenticeship developer at SUNY.
