Recent water accidents have authorities keeping an eye on Labor Day weekend

Labor Day is just around the corner and is one of the last chances for people to have summer fun – and emergency responders have marked it on the calendar.

Several recent accidents on the water show how quickly something can go wrong.

The authorities are aware that this is the last opportunity for many people to experience the summer and the rescue services are prepared for this.

As the sun slowly sets on another summer, people like Brett Morris are doing things like boating on Utah Lake to enjoy it for as long as possible.

“My family and I went out to have some fun. It was a beautiful night out there. You can see the sunset, it’s breathtaking,” Morris said.

Labor Day is just around the corner and for many it is the last chance to have some summer fun.

But fun without safety is no fun at all, and Morris knows that.

“We’re just making sure we have everything when we go out there so everyone is safe when we get in the water,” he said.

There are sure to be plenty of people having fun on the water at Utah Lake.

Most of it is certainly harmless, but Sergeant Spencer Cannon of the Utah County Sheriff’s Department said they have observed many water-related incidents across the state.

“People have been seriously injured or even died in water accidents,” Cannon said.

In August alone, people drowned in Willard Bay, Quail Creek, Flaming Gorge and Lake Powell.

And during busy times like Labor Day, Cannon said her search and rescue team is ready and waiting in case something happens.

“We’re kind of holding our breath waiting for the hammer to drop and we get the site,” Cannon said.

There is no guarantee that anything bad will happen.

Cannon said there have been holiday weekends when nothing has happened, but he said it’s always important to know your capabilities and take safety precautions like life jackets when on the water.
