Man in Yishun survives fall from 9th floor thanks to respiratory protection, Singapore News

A man fell nine floors from a HDB block in Yishun and was cushioned by a rescue helicopter.

A video of the incident was posted on the Facebook group Complaint Singapore on Tuesday evening (27 August).

The clip, which generated over a thousand reactions and a hundred comments, shows the man standing on a ledge in front of an apartment window with his back to the window.

The man then attempts to maneuver around a pillar and onto the ledge of the next unit, but loses his footing and falls.

Then he lands with a thud on the rescue backpack below him, startling the spectators, who can be heard screaming.

Another video posted on Xiaohongshu shows the air backpack being set up at this time by several officers of the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).

When the man reaches the air tank, he is seen lying motionless, face down. SCDF officers rush to check on him.

Later, some of the staff present are seen covering the man with a towel and placing him on a stretcher.

Some internet users expressed concern for the man after watching the clips, saying the airbag appeared to be only partially inflated.

“Oh my God, it seems like there is not enough air in the airbag? There is no springy movement after the fall,” commented one of them.

Others pointed out that the airbag had been sufficiently prepared but apparently had no air left because the man landed on a corner and not in the middle.

In response to AsiaOne’s queries, SCDF said it received a call for assistance from Block 624, Yishun Ring Road at around 10:35am on Tuesday.

When they arrived at the scene, they saw a 41-year-old man standing on a ledge on the ninth floor.

He then fell onto the rescue backpack as it was inflating and was subsequently taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital by the SCDF.

According to police, the man was arrested under Section 7 of the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) Act.
