Birmingham City vs Fulham: League Cup – BBC Sport

Former Birmingham loanee Jay Stansfield scored against his old club to help a much-changed Fulham reach the third round of the Carabao Cup.

League One club Birmingham had hoped to cause a surprise in front of their home fans but Fulham, who made 11 changes to the starting XI that started last Saturday’s Premier League win over Leicester, were 2-0 up after 15 minutes.

Mexican striker Raul Jimenez opened the scoring with a penalty in the ninth minute after Alex Cochrane had touched Tom Cairney’s shot with his hand.

Birmingham, who had only won the competition in 2011, fell further behind after 21-year-old Stansfield’s skilful finish, which he refused to celebrate out of respect for his former club.

Birmingham were not intimidated, however, and almost pulled one back with a Keshi Anderson header, but Timothy Castagne made a brilliant save on the goal line before Willum Thor Willumsson hit the bar with a free kick.

“I am almost 100 percent sure that he will be our player, but I can’t guarantee it because it is difficult to control the market,” Silva said when asked about Stansfield’s future after the game.

“The plan for him is to be part of our squad. It’s really tough to be one of the eleven players in the Premier League, but he’s ready to fight for it.”
