Uruguayan defender Juan Izquierdo dies after collapsing during match | Football news

Juan Izquierdoa 27-year-old defender of Uruguayan club Nacional, died on Tuesday following a medical emergency that occurred during a match last week. The club announced the tragic news of his death.
Izquierdo collapsed on the pitch during a Copa Libertadores match against Sao Paulo in Brazil on August 22. The incident was attributed to an irregular heartbeat and he has been under medical treatment since then.
“It is with deep sadness and shock in our hearts that Club Nacional announces the death of our beloved player Juan Izquierdo,” Nacional wrote on X.

“We extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and relatives. The whole of Nacional mourns his irreparable loss.”
Dominguez, the head of CONMEBOLthe South American Football Confederation, expressed its condolences to Izquierdo’s relatives and friends during this difficult time.
“South American football mourns,” he added.

The São Paulo club expressed its deep sadness after the tragic incident became known and described it as a “sad day for football”.
In the 84th minute of the match at the Morumbi Stadium, Izquierdo collapsed on the pitch and lost consciousness without there being any physical contact with another player.
The player was immediately removed from the field by ambulance and subsequently received medical treatment in the intensive care unit of the Albert Einstein Hospital.
