Businesses in East New Orleans report suffering from frequent boil water advisories

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – As East New Orleans issues a boil water advisory for the third time in the past month, businesses in the area say they are suffering economically from the frequent supply interruptions.

“New Orleans East, we are already dealing with so many challenges, the last thing we need is a boil water advisory or a disruption to our water system,” said Anisha Johnson, owner of 11.22 Restaurant, Bar & Grill on Morrison Road. “This is happening more often than usual.”

The frequent warnings are also affecting local residents, who said their frustration is growing.

“It’s just ridiculous in New Orleans, with this water,” said a man who did not want to give his name.

The latest warning applies to much of eastern New Orleans, including areas north of Lake Forest Boulevard, Lakefront Airport and the Oak Island neighborhood.

Johnson said she was grateful to have been informed of the latest warning, but said she has now lost at least a day’s worth of revenue because customers rarely visit restaurants while a warning is in effect.

“When there is no boil water advisory, I usually get a lot of orders,” she said Tuesday. “And it’s really slow going.”

“You could put out as many bottles of hand sanitizer, laundry detergent and the like as you want. But people aren’t going to come when they see that notice.”

The warning was issued at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. Required water quality testing by the Louisiana Department of Health will take at least 24 hours, the New Orleans Sewerage & Water Board said.

The utility said a contractor repaired a burst water main at the corner of Morrison and Bundy before 1:30 p.m., but the damage was already done. Water pressure had dropped below acceptable levels to prevent possible bacteriological contamination in the area.

“We get no compensation for losing customers,” Johnson said. “Today, for example, we’re going to lose a lot of customers until they send a text saying they can use the water again. We get no compensation from the state, from the city, from anything else.”

During a boil water advisory, residents and businesses in affected areas are advised not to drink tap water or use it for activities involving prolonged physical contact such as bathing, showering, cooking, doing laundry or washing dishes.
