A cult campus bar closes in September

It’s the end of an era for a popular Columbus dive bar.

The Bier Stube, a campus staple for decades, will close its doors for good at the end of September. Craig Kempton, the bar’s owner, announced the sad news on social media and expressed regret that he could not save the Stube. The bar’s last weekend of operation will be September 21, and the building must be vacated by October 1.

The Bier Stube at 1497 N. High St. is a popular hangout for students and locals alike, and is known for its unpretentious atmosphere and cheap drinks. However, the bar and several other buildings in the area are slated for demolition to make way for a new 13-story student housing tower. The project, developed by Chicago-based Harbor Bay Ventures, is part of a larger redevelopment plan for the block of 9th and High Street.

The new tower is intended to be a striking addition to the campus grounds and features a dark-colored design made from solid wood, a sustainable and modern building material. Despite the excitement surrounding the new development, the closure of the Bier Stube is a bittersweet moment for the Columbus community.

As the parlor prepares to close, Kempton has promised to announce more details in the coming days. Now, guests have a few weeks to raise a glass and say goodbye to a place that was more than just a bar – for many, it was a second home.
